Sandusky police Officer Andrew Dunn was shot and killed in the line of duty early Saturday morning after a shootout with a suspect who was also wounded.
Shortly after 3 a.m., shouts of "Shots fired!" and "Officer down!" rang out from the police scanner as Sandusky Police Department officers rushed to the scene.
Dunn had approached Kevin Randleman, 50, 900 block W. Adams St., as Randleman rode down Tyler Street on a bicycle, said Erie County Sheriff Terry Lyons at a Saturday morning news conference.
Gunfire was exchanged between the two, with Dunn sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Lyons said.
Dunn was rushed to Firelands Regional Medical Center's emergency room, where doctors pronounced him dead at 4:33 a.m.
The suspected gunman, Randleman, also suffered at least one gunshot wound and a medical helicopter flew him to the University of Toledo Medical Center's trauma unit, where he's being treated for that injury.
Police didn't say what transpired that led to the shooting, or why Officer Dunn initially approached Randleman.
"It will be part of the investigation to determine that," Erie County Sheriff's Cpt. Paul Sigsworth said. "There was no call. This was a self-initiated activity by Officer Dunn."
Dunn has been on the force for three years, following in the footsteps of his father, a 24-year veteran with the Sandusky Police Department.
Dunn is married and has two young children, including a 5-month-old.
Sandusky police Chief Jim Lang said Dunn was a "fine, young officer."
Dunn is the first officer in the Sandusky Police Department's history to be killed in the line of duty, Lang said.
Lang requested that the Erie County Sheriff's office take over the investigation. Lyons said the sheriff's office is working with the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation to process evidence from the scene.
Randleman has an extensive criminal history — which includes assault, gun and alcohol and drug charges — and has served several stints behind bars.
"Our hearts and prayers are with (Dunn's) family," Lyons said.
