A trooper jumped onto a concrete barrier just before a vehicle struck his patrol car on I-95 early this morning, state police said.

The trooper escaped injury; two people in the other car were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision happened at about 1:50 a.m. as the trooper responded to a crash on southbound I-95 in the area of U.S. 202, said state police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh.

He activated his emergency equipment as he came to a stop in the left lane, Whitmarsh said.

As the trooper exited his fully marked patrol car, he saw a vehicle approaching that did not appear to be slowing down or changing lanes.

He jumped onto a concrete barrier just as the car crashed into his vehicle.

An investigation determined that the driver of the car, a 1989 Toyota Cressida, tried to stop prior to the impact but slid on the wet roadway, Whitmarsh said.

The driver, Cecil Checkley, 66, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was not injured. A 59-year-old female passenger suffered facial injuries, and a 68-year-old male passenger suffered other non-life-threatening injuries.

Checkley was cited for careless driving.

The incident affected traffic for about 90 minutes.
