Press release: 04-19-19 at about 7:44 PM Pine County dispatch received a call of a possible body in the water in Cross Lake, east of Pine City. The call was from witnesses fishing from the shore. Pine County Deputies and a Minnesota Conservation Officer responded to the area. They were not able to determine what the object in the water was from the shore. The Conservation Officer got his boat and he and a Deputy launched it into Cross Lake. Within a minute of leaving the launch both officers were thrown from the boat into the water. They began swimming towards shore and additional Deputies procured a row boat from a neighboring property and attempted to rescue the officers in the water. They successfully reached the Pine County Deputy and retrieved him, he was later transported by ambulance to Firstlight Hospital in Mora where he was treated for temperature related injuries. The Conservation Officer slipped under the water before they could get to him. An intensive search was conducted and the Conservation Officer’s body was later recovered at about 1:35AM. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Pine County Sheriff’s Office. Midwest Medical Examiners will be conducting an autopsy. The names of the victims are not being released at this time, pending family notification.
The victim Deputy was treated and released.
Efforts were made to attempt to locate the object that was initially reported, without success. We do not have any reports of a missing person and no further searches will be conducted at this time.
The Pine County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by many agencies, including: the Minnesota DNR, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Wisconsin DNR, Chisago County Sheriff’s Office, Pine City Fire, Stacy/Lent Fire, St. Louis County Rescue and Essentia Ambulance.
Further updates will be provided by the Pine County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota DNR when available.
